Grammaticalization (abstract)
2009. október 10. szombat, 12:53

The paper describes the phenomenon of grammaticalization based on a case study from the Hungarian language. The Hungarian discourse marker asszem evolved from the main clause azt hiszem ’I think’ through syntactic devalvation, phonetic reduction, semantic bleaching, and pragmatic strengthening. Primarily, this kind of grammaticalization process is typical to texts created using different infocommunication technologies; this is why texts of internet forums were chosen to be analyzed. Written orality (in short messages, chat and forum texts) often features abbreviations, contracted forms but in the case of the discourse marker asszem it is much more: here a grammatic-pragmatic modification took place, as well.
